It’s time for us to talk about the crisis in childcare and early learning. Because of the pandemic, hundreds of centres have faced closures and many more have had to operate at a reduced capacity. The new wave of Omicron means this isn’t going away any time soon.

Even before COVID-19, early learning and childcare in Reid was facing challenges. The system had become outdated and expensive. Despite the fact it’s an essential service, government funding failed to keep pace, leaving families out-of-pocket with expenses and creating unequal access to appropriate, high-quality early learning and childcare. Educators and teachers were leaving the sector in high numbers. In the last few months, COVID-19 has made these challenges worse.
Here at Thrive by Five, we understand how critical the first five years of development are to a child’s life – and how challenging it can be when disrupted. We, along with our supporters, have been working hard for reform of our early learning system – aiming to make it universally accessible, high quality and more affordable.
Now it’s time to step things up in Reid.
The Federal election just around the corner means local MPs, candidates and political parties are more open than they have been for a long time to hear about the concerns and aspirations of local parents, educators and communities. And our current climate has shown that this community input is more important than ever. Discussions about the future and wellbeing of Reid’s children must include local voices.
This is our chance to have our voice heard.
Please join Thrive by Five and The Parenthood for a local forum to discuss the future for children in Reid. You will have the opportunity to share your lived experience of early learning, or to share your ideas about how we can make it high quality, affordable and universally accessible.

Reform of the early learning and childcare system will drive workforce participation, particularly for women, boost productivity and GDP, boost our nation’s education performance, and give children the best possible start in life.
We hope you will join us. Together, we can build a thriving future for Reid’s children.
