Thrive by Five congratulates Federal Labor on new cross-government early years strategy

8 November 2021– Thrive by Five has today welcomed the Federal Labor Opposition announcement of a commitment to a new cross-government early years strategy should it form government next year.

Thrive by Five CEO Jay Weatherill said “I congratulate the Federal Labor Opposition for recognising the vital importance of the early years and its plans for bringing together responsibilities for early learning and childcare, health and child protection.

“This measure would be a significant step towards achieving universally accessible, high quality and affordable early learning and childcare for every child across Australia.

“It also builds on a previous Federal Opposition plan to offer a longer-term shift to a 90% subsidy for early learning and childcare for all Australian families.

“A recent national poll found improving early childhood education and care was an important issue when voting in the Federal election for nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of Australians[1]. It was an important Federal election voting issue for 88 per cent of parents with a child under school age who attended daycare or preschool.

“Parents, educators and the broader community can see the benefits of early learning in giving children the best start in life, and for the economy and gender equality.

“Now it’s time for a firm commitment from all parties contesting the Federal election to a universally accessible, high quality and affordable early learning and childcare system,” he said.
