GOVERNMENT’S CHILDCARE REFORM WOULD BE A COST-OF-LIVING LIFELINE FOR YOUNG FAMILIES
30 November 2024 – News that universal childcare and early learning will be a central plank of the government’s election platform[1] has been heartily endorsed by advocates who are calling for a $10-a-day fee cap.
Minderoo Foundation’s Thrive by Five campaign, which has the backing of more than 100 organisations, says universally affordable and accessible early learning would be a cost-of-living lifeline for young families.
Minderoo’s Jay Weatherill said the government’s position appeared to be in line with the vision articulated by Thrive by Five.
“This is a very positive sign that the Albanese Government is serious about delivering its commitment to universal childcare and early learning,” Mr Weatherill said.
A recent report from Impact Economics and Policy[2] estimated a $10-a-day flat fee could enable up to 226,000 extra children to attend early learning, and increase women’s workforce participation by up to 134,000 full-time-equivalent workers.
Mr Weatherill said it was imperative the opposition matched the commitment.
“The best interests of children and families in a cost of living crisis must be above politics, so we call on all parties in the parliament to match this commitment prior to the election.”
