Childcare boost welcome step towards universal early learning
3 May 2021 – The Thrive by Five campaign says improvements to the childcare subsidy announced yesterday are an important first step towards a universal early learning system.
Thrive by Five CEO Jay Weatherill said it was pleasing the Federal Government had viewed the issue with fresh eyes and acknowledged the need for reform, particularly since the instalment of Alan Tudge as Minister for Education and Jane Hume as Minister for Women’s Economic Security.
“A broad alliance of organisations have come together under the Thrive by Five banner to campaign for high quality, universally accessible and affordable early learning and childcare,” Mr Weatherill said.
“Any measures which relieve cost of living pressures on Australian families with young children are welcome.
“However, we look forward to further budget measures which provide long term funding for 3 and 4-year-old preschool and funding for workforce development to improve the skills, qualifications and rewards for early educators.”
Mr Weatherill said that while childcare played an important role in workforce participation, it was most vital in providing children with early learning opportunities in a safe and nurturing environment.
“Until we have a universal system that guarantees access to the highest quality early learning for everyone, we won’t see the full benefits of reform,” he said.
“I look forward to seeing these further measures in the Budget and encourage all State and Territory leaders to bring their plans and ideas on early learning to July’s National Cabinet to build on the commitments that have been announced.”
